“Jesus is at the right hand of God as the executive director of history, directing everything for the benefit of the church. If you belong to Him, then everything that happens ultimately happens for you.” (Timothy Keller)
We all love a good reunion. We enjoy catching up with old friends, reconnecting with family members we haven’t seen in years. There’s something comforting about discovering that the bonds of our relationships have endured despite the wear and tear of years. We laugh at shared memories, grieve painful moments of loss and failure.
Thinking about reunion brings me to reflect on Jesus’s ascension, which many churches celebrate last Thursday. Over Easter, we focused on the greatest transaction in the history of mankind. Jesus, the Son of God, taking our place so we could be accepted by God. But that transaction came at the cost of the greatest separation. For a time, Jesus experienced what it meant to be cast out of God’s presence, hence the cry, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”
Yet on the third day, Jesus walked out of the grave in a glorious, never-to-die-again, resurrection body—the greatest validation, that historically confirms that He has paid in full the price for our forgiveness.
And then forty days later, Jesus went back to His Father, in what must be the sweetest and greatest reunion in history. No victory lap, election result, Oscar or Nobel award compares to this. Jesus is now highly exalted and is ruling over nations.
His reunion with His Father is both a guarantee and preparation for our reunion with Him.
And God put all things under His feet and gave Him as head over all things to the church (Eph 1:22)
Reflection: What difference does it make today to know that Jesus rules all things for your good?
