Isn’t it true that most of us operate in BUSY mode most of the time? We juggle between work, house chores, and daily responsibilities. Even when we relax, our minds (or our fingers) are busy scrolling and tapping on our devices. It seems like we are always in a hurry. The phrase “We need it yesterday!” (as impossible as that sounds) perfectly reflects our fast-paced world.
Sadly, this hurried mindset often affects our devotional life as well. We skim through Bible passages, check off a devotional from our to-do list, and then dive right back into life’s busyness. But we can’t grow spiritually by just a little dip here and there.
That’s why your soul needs to go slow.
Here’s why:
- We listen to God better when we are free, not filled with distractions. Slowing down creates the silence needed to actually listen.
- Growth takes time. Like plants, deep spiritual roots don’t take shape overnight. They need stillness and space.
- Slowness increases our enjoyment. As with most things we enjoy in life, we take time as much as we could with them.
- Your soul was never made to live on fast-forward.
Busyness wears us down. Slowing down restores us.
The Puritans, a group of devout Christians in the 16th and 17th centuries, placed great emphasis on Scripture, holiness, and heartfelt devotion to God. However, when they spoke of meditating on God’s Word, they meant engaging with it deeply-reading actively, reflecting prayerfully, and applying it wholeheartedly.
One of the Puritans, Thomas Brooks, writes:
“It is not the bee’s touching of the flower that gathers honey, but her abiding for a time upon the flower that draws out the sweet. It is not he that reads most, but he that meditates most, that will prove the choicest, sweetest, wisest and strongest Christian.”
This kind of meditation is the key to blessing, as we read in the Psalm:
“Blessed is the one… whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on His law day and night.” (Psalm 1:1-2)
If we desire to grow in Christ and walk in His ways, we must learn to SLOW DOWN and MEDITATE on His Word.
Read it s-l-o-w-l-y. Pray over it. Ask God to open your heart and let you taste the goodness of His truth.
