It goes without saying that certain brands are known for their trustworthiness and reliability. People are often willing to pay a premium price for these products, knowing that they will live up to their reputation. The same is true of God. He has shown that He lives up to His reputation. When it comes to His words, promises, and yes including His warnings, God’s character can be summed up as faithful. He keeps His words, fulfils His promises, and executes His warnings. “Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness” (Lam 3:22-23).
God’s ultimate expression of faithfulness can be seen in the life of Jesus. Jesus was faithful in His earthly ministry whether He was teaching, listening, talking, or healing, even to the point of death. But years before launching into public ministry and the cross, Jesus lived in obscurity. All Christians can look back at the cross and see the faithful Saviour who remained faithful for us, unfaithful sinners.
When we put our trust in Jesus, His Spirit begins His work of imprinting His faithfulness in us. Paul writes, “The fruit of the Spirit is …. Faithfulness” (Gal 5:22-23). This means, as is often the case, the Spirit teaches us to be content in serving behind the scenes, often through years of obscurity. Faithfulness is not always seen in big, dramatic moments, but in the quiet, consistent obedience of everyday life. This is the kind of life that the Spirit is forming in us.
Reflection:
- What is the next thing God is placing before me today?
- Where is God calling me to be faithful, especially in the small or unseen things?
