God’s Searching Question

A good question is powerful. It doesn’t just seek the right answer but also seeks the person answering. Have you noticed that of all the things God could’ve done in after our first parents fell into sin, He asked a question: “Where are you?” (Gen 3:9). He wasn’t asking about their location as much as about their relationship to Him. Where are you when it comes to trusting and obeying Me? Which direction is your heart devoted to?

Instead of coming in roaring anger and judgment, God sought His failing and fallen image bearers. He knew they were afraid. The warm and intimate fellowship they once shared was now shattered by sin. Yet He was the one who initiated the search party. “Where are you?”

Unfortunately, our first parents’ response left much to be desired. Instead of confessing their sin, they were blaming God and others. At this point, God had every right to judge them and pass the sentence. But instead, He promised them the first gospel, speaking to the serpent:

And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel. (Gen 3:15)

This “offspring of the woman” is none other than Jesus, the second Adam and God’s perfect image bearer. Jesus is the Promised One who has defeated Satan, sin, and death. Those who trust Him no longer need to hide. Instead of shrinking back, we are invited to come to Him, because we are known, forgiven, and restored.

Reflection:

  • What does it look like for you to step out of hiding and embrace God’s gracious invitation in Christ?
  • Where are you right now in your relationship with God?
