What’s Causing the Conflict?

Written by:

Most of us have been in a conflict situation where we spent inordinate amount of time on the surface issue: whether it’s a career decision, an online comment, or a disagreement. But we seldom ask what is driving us underneath the surface.

James asks, “What causes fights and quarrels among you?” (Jam 4:1). He then points out the real issue: our conflicts often come from the desires of our hearts fighting within us.

It might be the desire to be recognized, to have things done our way, to be respected by our peers, to be in control, or just simply to not be left behind. What we desire might not be necessarily wrong. But when that desire becomes something we must have, to the point that we are willing to sin or hurt others to get it, that’s when our good desire can become a controlling desire.

The good news is that James presents us with a cure: God’s greater grace. This is the gospel according to James.

“God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble” (Jam 4:6)

Jesus is the ultimate example of this humility. He humbled Himself for our sake, reconciling us with God at the cost of His own life. So let us repent of our pride and allow Him to reshape our desires.

Reflection

  • What desires might be fueling conflict in your life that you need to bring before God?
  • What would it look like to humble yourself before God and trust His grace in that situation?
