The Lie of “Being True to Yourself”

Written by:

The movie The Incredibles hits the nail on the head when one of the characters says, “You always, always say ‘Be true to yourself,’ but you never say which part of yourself to be true to!” This quote perfectly encapsulates the message our culture drums into us today: be true to yourself, follow your heart, you do you!

The central problem with this message is that it places the self at the center of identity. It suggests that only I know what is good for me, only know what feels right, and only get the final say in determining which part of myself to be true to. This is the very lie that our first parents believed in the Garden of Eden—a lie that has now become accepted as truth in our world today.

The Bible, however, calls us to center our identity on God and to renew it through His Son, Jesus. It is only when we look to Him that we discover who we truly are and what we were created for. Only by spending time with Him can we begin to unmask the lie of simply “being true to ourselves” and instead find the deeper truth that we are deeply loved and cared for by our heavenly Father.
