Think back to a moment when your life or work (or both!) felt overwhelming. Who stepped in with a word, a prayer, or even a quiet act of kindness that helped you? Paul ends his letter to the Colossians with a reminder that ministry is a team effort, never a solo task. Whatever form of ministry we do, it is woven through ordinary people who chose to walk the narrow way alongside us.
In Colossians 4:7-18, Paul names people like Tychicus, Onesimus, Epaphras, Luke, and others. Each one of them played a different role: messenger, comforter, prayer warrior, doctor, encourager. Each were essential to the work of the gospel. Their faithfulness helped Paul remain faithful. Their presence helped Paul persevere.
Note how Paul commends Epaphras, for example:
“He is always wrestling in prayer for you, that you may stand firm in all the will of God, mature and fully assured.” (Col 4:12)
The work of the gospel is a long-distance run, not a sprint. We all take part in the work. Like Paul and his friends, some roles are public, others are hidden. But they all matter in the hands of Jesus.
Let us remember that faithfulness thrives in community. You might be the encouragement someone else needs to stay on the narrow way today.
Reflection:
- Who has quietly strengthened my faith recently, and how can I thank them?
- How can I be a faithful companion to someone who might be struggling this week?

This devotion is sent weekly to staff during school terms. It has been lightly edited for a general audience.
