God’s Revealing Question

Written by:

In 2010, an Australian law student named Luke Moore discovered a glitch in his bank account that gave him unlimited access to money. Over the next two years, Luke spent millions on an Aston Martin, a Maserati, a speedboat, a drum kit signed by Amy Winehouse, and other extravagant purchases. What would you do if you were in Luke’s place?

In Mark 10, a blind beggar named Bartimaeus is given a far greater opportunity. Jesus, the Son of God, stands before the poor man, and asks:

“What do you want Me to do for you?” (Mar 10:51)

This question mirrors an earlier incident where Jesus asked two of His disciples, James and John, the exact same question (10:36). While James and John didn’t waste the opportunity the way Luke Moore did, they wasted it, nonetheless. They asked Jesus for the highest places in His kingdom. They valued what the world values. They were motivated by ambition to be seen, admired, and powerful.

In contrast, Mark highlights Bartimaeus’ persistent faith, his cry for mercy, and his eagerness to follow Jesus all the way.

Even though he was blind, he had his sights set on the right thing: Jesus. The disciples, though able to see, had their sights set on the wrong thing: themselves.

Jesus didn’t just give Bartimaeus physical sight, He gave him a new life. He still does that today.

Reflection:

  • What motivates your service? Is it to be seen as great, or to make Jesus great?
  • What usually dominates your request to God these days?
